The "Honeymoon" stage

I started my new job this week, I'm the youngest person there by about 15 years (and that's being nice). So of course as the new girl I get bombarded in the first few days with personal questions, and then get to hear everyone elses. But something one of the older ladies said stuck me, and I still haven't decide how I feel about it.

The first morning I was there the woman training me noticed my wedding rings.
She goes "Oh, you're married?"
I say "Yeah for a little over 2 years now."
She smirks and says "wait til the honeymoon stage wears off."

At the time I just smiled and nodded, I mean what the hell do I know compared to a woman who's been married almost 50 years. In the past week though this conversation keeps popping back into my brain. I mean this woman doesn't even know me and she's telling me to wait for my marriage to go to hell.

As you know we never really had a "honeymoon stage", we did everything so fast there could never have been anything but honesty between us. I really started to think about what that could possibly mean since I am pretty sure I didn't experience it. I mean I get it theoretically, it's the time in a relationship when the "shine" wears off, but we never had a shine per-say.

Further thought lead me to think that perhaps more than anything else the "honeymoon" is more of a state of mind. As long as you put the effort into your marriage then the honeymoon will never end. We take time every day to make each other smile, to hug and kiss, to make jokes. Just last night we were up til midnight having tickle fights. After sleeping in the same bed together for 3 years, after getting married and having a baby, we still have tickle fights at least a few nights a week. We ask each other some times if we'll always be this way, and without real thought the other always answers "YES".

We make time to for our relationship, we put all other things aside and simply LOVE each other. We decided when I was pregnant to never let the baby ruin OUR relationship. I think a lot of people forget that, yes she is the most important thing in the world to both of us, but then we are each others second. So one kid or seven kids we will ALWAYS make time for each other and for simple things like late night tickle.

So I guess the "honeymoon" is a personal choice between spouses, as for me and mine ours will never end.

Stay Tuned
